Iraqi senior cleric rejects inaction on US anti-Iran policies

IRNA Iraq will not remain indifferent towards economic sanctions against Iran, said Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the Iraqi National Wisdom Movement on Wednesday.

'Adopting a policy of threats and sanctions will only result in more wars and destructions in the Middle East,' Hakim said during the Eid al-Adha prayers sermon, calling on US President Donald Trump to abandon its anti-Iran measures.

The senior Iraqi cleric warned Washington against imposing economic sanctions on Iran and trying to put the country under blockades.

Hakim urged the US to pay heed to the far-reaching consequences of its anti-Iran measures for Iraq.

'Iran and Iraq, in addition to trade relations, have profound historical and cultural ties,' he said.

'We reject imposing brutal economic sanctions against nations and we are not going to allow the interests of our country to be put under risk,' he said.

He went on to say that in today's world every single phenomenon is going to affect all other components.

'It will be hard to imagine that problems in the relations between Iran and the United States would not influence Iraq,' he stressed.

In the same way, Iran will be affected by Iraq's economic, political and security crises, he added.

'The same is true about Turkey, Saudi Arabia and all the other countries surrounding Iraq,' he said.

Hakim called on Baghdad to use all mechanisms and options available to generate a common political climate where the interests of both Iran and the US, away from sanctions and threats, are ensured.
