US rejects reports on secret meeting with Iran's top commander

IRNA US mission in Iraq denounced the reports published by Arab media on a meeting between a senior US envoy and a top Iranian military commander.

The Kuwaiti al-Jarida newspaper had claimed that Brett McGurk, Special US Presidential Envoy and Qasem Soleimani, Commander of the Quds Force of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), had a secret meeting last Tuesday (September 11).

The meeting was allegedly convened to discuss formation of a new Iraqi government, according to the Kuwaiti daily.

'The Embassy is aware of false media reports that Special Presidential Envoy Brett McGurk and an Iranian General met to discuss forming a new Iraqi government. The reports are fake news. No such meeting ever happened,' the US Embassy Spokesman Charles Cole said on the embassy Twitter account Sunday.

The American envoy represents President Donald Trump in the US-led so-called global coalition against the terrorist group of Daesh (ISIS). The Iranian General Soleimani is also head of the forces that have been assisting the Iraqi forces in fight against terrorism.
