Zarif terms region as priority for Iran

IRNA - Iranian Foreign Minister in a message hailed his regional tour, saying region has always been a priority for Iran.

'Ending a successful regional tripheld important talks on ties & regional developments w/ President Assad, PM & FM of Syria; and with President Erdogan, Speaker of Parliament & FM of Turkey, & other senior officials in both capitals,' Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted on Wednesday.

He added 'For Iran, our region is always our priority.'

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in the Syrian capital Tuesday on a day-long visit.

Zarif visited Damascus at the invitation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Elaborating on his Damascus visit, Zarif described his meetings with the Syrian officials as very good.

Talks with President Assad were very fruitful, the Iranian foreign minister said, adding that good negotiations were held about the upcoming Astana talks on Syria and the mutual cooperation.

In Syria, ways to implement mutual agreements were also discussed by the two sides, the top diplomat noted.

Zarif is now visiting Turkey to confer with the country's officials on issues of mutual interests and regional developments.

In the meeting, he also congratulated the successful conduct of local elections in Turkey and voiced satisfaction over his second visit in less than one month which indicates both sides pay due attention to such relations.

Zarif also appreciated the stances adopted by Turkish government and officials in opposing the unfair economic sanctions against Iran and underlined the need to further bolster and strengthen regional cooperation between the two countries.

Experts in Middle East affairs believe that development of relations between Iran and Syria requires continuous consultations and the recent visit of Zarif to Damascus took place within this framework and also with purpose to consolidate peace and stability in the region.
