Pakistan carefully monitoring Iran-US tensions

IRNA - Pakistani Foreign Minister says the government is fully aware of regional developments and carefully monitoring growing Iran-US tensions.

Giving briefing to National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that Pakistan desires peaceful border with Iran.

The minster went on to say that he has met with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif three times to strengthen Iran-Pakistan ties.

Qureshi noted that the US, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have special view points towards Iran which is not only affecting the region but the US-Europe ties also.

He said a new regional situation is evolving and Pakistan is carefully analyzing that. He warned that if the situation deteriorates it could engulf the whole region.

We would follow a clear policy keeping in view the regional developments, he said.

Qureshi said that Pakistan has to follow a clear policy on Iran-US tensions. The minister said that a five-member advisory council comprising of retired foreign secretaries has been formed for consultations on the issue.

He said that Pakistan is touch with Iran over gas pipeline project and we desire to complete the project which was signed in Pakistan Peoples Party tenure.

The Foreign Minister told the committee if Pakistan fails to implement the project the country would have to pay hefty amount as penalty. He said that sanctions on Iran are hampering the project.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi added there are some tensions among the GCC countries but Pakistan enjoy strong relations with all GCC states.
