Tajikistan hopes for closer ties with Iran: Foreign minister

Tajikistan's Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi says the election of Hassan Rouhani as the next president of Iran plays a significant role in the further development of Tehran-Dushanbe ties.
In a Wednesday meeting with a representative of the Iranian president-elect in Tehran, Zarifi hailed Irans recent presidential election.

He said Iran's successfully-held June 14 election not only filled the hearts of the Iranian people with joy, but also pleased the nations that have friendly ties with the Islamic Republic.

He conveyed Tajik President Emomalii Rahmons warm greetings to Rouhani, expressing hope that Tehran-Dushanbe relations would further expand.

The Tajik foreign minister also submitted to Rohani an invitation from his countrys president to take part in the International Conference on Water Cooperation scheduled to be held on August 20-21 in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.

Rouhanis representative, for his part, said he was grateful for the invitation. He pointed to the commonalities and the longstanding relations between Iran and Tajikistan, and welcomed the expansion of political and economic ties between the two friendly nations.

Rouhani won Irans June 14 presidential election with an outright victory, gaining 18,613,329 votes, or 50.7 percent of a total of 36,704,156 ballots counted.

Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to participate in the presidential election. The voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent, according to the Interior Ministry.
