Iran condemns Afghan mosque attack

Tasnim Irans Foreign Ministry condemned a terrorist attack on a mosque in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province that has killed scores of people.

In a statement on Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi offered condolences and sympathy to the Afghan government and nation, especially the families of the victims of the barbaric act.

"This act of terror and targeting defenseless worshippers who were saying their Friday prayers at God's House shows the nasty nature and vicious goals of terrorists to sow discord among Muslim people of Afghanistan and add fuel to the fire of insecurity and instability in this Muslim neighboring country," the spokesman added, according to the Foreign Ministrys website.

At least 62 worshippers have been killed and more than 100 others wounded following multiple blasts at the mosque in the eastern province's Haska Mena district during Friday prayers.

The blasts came a day after the United Nations said violence in Afghanistan had reached "unacceptable" levels.

The figures - 1,174 deaths and 3,139 wounded from July 1 until September 30 this year - represent a 42 percent increase over the same period last year. More than 40 percent of the casualties were women and children.
