Argentina’s prosecutor general backs Iran against US-Israeli lobbies

Argentina’s National Prosecutor General Alejandra Gils Carbo has prevented a special prosecutor to a 1994 bombing attack on the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) from attending the US Congress to level allegations against Iran, Press TV reports.
“Ever since the prosecutor general took office, she has given solid proofs of her political determination to put justice only on behalf of the interests of the Argentinean people,” Argentinean lawmaker Leonardo Grosso told Press TV.

Prosecutor Alberto Nisman was expected to present an indictment to the US Congress accusing Iran of allegedly “infiltrating” Latin America to establish “intelligence networks.”

Nisman’s invitation was sponsored by Ileana Ross Lehtinen, the president of the US Congress Foreign Affairs Committee and a staunch supporter of US-led wars around the world.

The development comes after Argentina and Iran moved toward an enhancement of relations.

Tehran and Buenos Aires reached a comprehensive agreement to jointly probe the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Community center in Argentina.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his Argentinean counterpart Hector Timerman signed a memorandum of understanding in late January for the two countries to shed light on the bombing on the AMIA building in Buenos Aires, which killed 85 people and wounded 300 others.
“It was a very wise decision by the prosecutor general… The AMIA bombings happened here and everything must be solved here. There is an agreement approved by Argentina and Iran that will shed light on the case and allow us to look things over,” Leader of the Islamic Community of Argentina Sheikh Mohsen Ali said.
Argentinean President Cristina Kirchner has welcomed the agreement reached between the two countries as “historic.”

Argentina’s National Prosecutor General Gils Carbo was officially nominated by the Argentinean president for the post last year with both ruling party and opposition MPs approving her designation.

She has been under constant pressure by pro-Israel lobbies. Following the approval of the Buenos Aires-Tehran agreement at Argentina’s Congress earlier this year, the AMIA and the Delegation of Israeli-Argentine Associations (DAIA) filed an appeal demanding the judiciary to declare the unconstitutionality of the accord.

The MoU, which lays the foundation for the creation of a Truth Commission to investigate the AMIA attack, has been recently approved by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
