A senior Iranian gas industry official says the Islamic Republic and Azerbaijans Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic have resumed natural gas swap days after the transport of gas from Azerbaijan to its southern neighbor was suspended due to repairs.Managing Director of National Iranian Gas Company Javad Owji said on Wednesday that the suspension of Irans natural gas imports from Azerbaijan was due to basic and regular repairs on the Azeri part of the pipeline which transfers gas between the two countries.
He added that exporting Iran's gas to Nakhchivan has started, and Azerbaijan will also resume exporting natural gas to Iran in the next few days.
Iran is currently exporting natural gas to Turkey and Armenia without interruption, Owji pointed out.
State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) announced earlier this month that the supply of gas from Azerbaijan to Iran was suspended as of July 2 because of repairs on the Astara-Kazi Magomed pipeline.
As a result, the gas supply of Astara power station was also suspended between July 3 and 4.
Azerbaijan exports natural gas to Iran within the framework of swap operations in order to provide Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with gas.
Iran has swapped more than 1.75 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan over the past 8 years.
The gas swap reached its highest volume in 2012, when Iran exported 347 million cubic meters of Azeri gas to Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
