Syria chemical weapon claims pretext for aiding terrorists: Iranian MP

An Iranian lawmaker says the Western countries allegations that the Syrian forces have used chemical weapons against foreign-backed militants serve as a pretext to send more weapons to terrorists.
Despite repeated disclosure of atrocities committed by the terrorists in Syria, Western countries and their regional allies still insist on providing them with more arms as well as logistical, educational and financial aid, Baqer Hosseini, a member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Friday.

The lawmaker added that evidence presented by Russia earlier this week, showing that militants, not the Syrian Army, had used Sarin nerve gas during an attack, has once again revealed the evil face of the enemies of the Syrian government and nation.

On Tuesday, the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said Russian experts had collected samples at the site of the attack in the region of Khan al-Assal, near Aleppo, where over two dozen people, including 16 Syrian troops, died on March 19.

Based on the unsubstantiated claim that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons against the militants, President Barack Obama ordered the CIA on June 14 to provide arms to the anti-Syrian groups, saying the government of President Bashar al-Assad had crossed Washingtons red line.

Britain, France, and the United States have accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons. Damascus has denied the charges, saying it was actually the militants who used chemical weapons on several occasions.

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
