An Iranian engineering consultancy firm has been awarded a contract in India to carry out a major water management project east of the country near the Bay of Bengal.

Mahab Ghods, a privately owned company based in the Iranian capital Tehran, said on Wednesday that it had won a contract from India�s Odisha state�s Department of Water Resources for carrying out a project that will be key to agricultural and environmental development in the region.`

The company said in a statement that the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) project will be executed in Odisha�s Kharakhari region, located more than 10 kilometers off the coast of the Bay of Bangal.

It added that Mahab Qods had won the contract amid a fierce competition from top Indian engineering companies.

Odisha is India�s eight largest state by area and the 11th�largest by population. It has a major contribution to India�s gross domestic products with its massive agriculture sector.

Odisha�s state government put on an advertisement for selecting a consultant for the IWRM project in Kharakhari two years ago. The advert shows the project enjoys financial support from the World Bank due to its environmental aspects.

Mahab Qods has been Iran�s leading engineering company in overseas project. The company has carried major projects in Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Oman, Zimbabwe and Nepal. The project in Odisha will be Mahab�s third project in India, according to the company�s Wednesday statement.

Iranian companies are becoming increasingly involved in engineering and technical projects in other countries more than four decades after the victory of the Islamic revolution in the country.

That comes as the country was forced to use foreign expertise for carrying out most of its infrastructure projects before the 1979 Revolution.
