Stanford University listed 1,870 Iranian researchers among the top 2 percent of the most-cited scientists in the world, which has grown significantly compared to past years.
Stanford University has recently published an update of the list of the top 2% of most widely cited scientists in different disciplines. Globally, 200,409 scientists fall in the top 2 percent worldwide.
This ranking, considered the most prestigious worldwide, is based on the bibliometric information contained in the Scopus database and includes more than 200,000 researchers from the more than 8 million scientists considered to be active worldwide, with 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields taken into account.
In the latest version of this ranking, with the calculation of citations in 2021, there are 1,870 researchers from Iran, which has grown significantly in the last two years compared to previous years.
From 1996 to 2021, 715 researchers from Iran were listed, out of the total number of 195,506 international researchers.
Science diplomacy
Despite U.S. sanctions, the international activities of Iranian scientists have increased year by year, so that more than 35 percent of Iranian articles in Scopus have been multi-national projects, the deputy science minister, Peyman Salehi, has said.

In 2021, Iranian scientists published more than 77,000 scientific articles in the Scopus database, ranking 15th worldwide.

Academic quality
Fifty-eight universities from Iran were listed among the top universities in Asia, according to the 2022 Asia University Rankings of the Times Higher Education.
The 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, based on universities contributions to delivering the UNs Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), listed 27 Iranian universities.
Also, 59 Iranian universities have been listed among the top 3,000 institutions in the world in terms of academic quality, according to the 2021-2022 report released by University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP).
The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings 2022 list has been released, which included three Iranian universities out of a total of 550 institutes worldwide that highlighted graduate employment processes.
Meanwhile, 41 Iranian universities in engineering sciences and 12 universities in computer sciences have made a place among the top 1,188 universities in the world with the announcement of Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 by subject.
It also has introduced 59 Iranian universities among the top institutions in World University Rankings 2022.
The THE Education Young University Rankings 2021 listed 26 Iranian institutions among the worlds best universities that are 50 years old or younger.
Moreover, 34 Iranian universities and institutions were listed among the top 1,000 in the world, according to Shanghai Rankings Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2021.
