4.6-magnitude earthquake jolts northeastern Iran


A 4.6-magnitude earthquake has shaken Irans northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi, with no reports of casualties and material damage yet.







The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 2:09 a.m. on Friday local time, was around 41 kilometers from the city of Mashhad, the provincial capital, and the seismic center was located at a depth of 8 km, Iranian media reported.

The earthquake was felt in Mashhad and sent many onto the streets in panic.

Local officials said rescue teams were sent to suburban regions, but there have been no reports about victims or possible damages.

Khorasan Razavi province in northeastern Iran is widely known for the millions of Shia pilgrims it annually attracts, but it is also home to various tourist attractions.

Moreover, Mashhad, where the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Iman, is located, is the capital of Khorasan Razavi and the second most populous city in Iran.

It is worth mentioning that this city was the capital of Iran during the Afsharid dynasty.

The city of Mashhad welcomes over 27 million pilgrims from inside the country and two million pilgrims from abroad every year.

Also, next to the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the province has various tourist attractions.
