Disputed gas field with Kuwait can be settled peacefully

The Iran Project - A senior aide to the Iranian foreign minister, has stated that Iran is not concerned about the dispute with Kuwait over the Arash gas field in the Persian Gulf.

Ali Asghar Khaji made the remarks in an interview with Arabic-language al-Masirah TV on Sunday that Iran is not worried that the issue of Arash gas field, known in Kuwait as al-Durra, would become problematic in bilateral relations with Kuwait.

Khaji believes that the issue can be resolved through cooperation and good relations between the two countries.

He also expressed optimism about reaching a settlement, despite attempts by some media outlets to create division among regional countries.

The dispute arose after Kuwait and Saudi Arabia claimed exclusive rights to the gas field, which straddles an undemarcated area in Iranian and Kuwaiti waters.

However, experts suggest that Iran could have the majority share of the gas field if boundaries are properly demarcated.

Iran has expressed dissatisfaction with a contract signed between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia last year that excludes Iran from the development of the field.

Nonetheless, Khaji stated that Iran is committed to resolving the dispute peacefully and has engaged in technical negotiations with Kuwait in recent years.
