According to The Iran Project,Majid Assadi, the head of the Persian Gulf Nuclear Medicine Research Center at the Bushehr University of Medical Sciences told reporters that "For the first time in the country, patients with advanced cancer resistant to treatment were treated in Bushehr Nuclear Medicine Center using Alphaza radiopharmaceutical, which is one of the new and targeted radionuclide treatment methods."

"The employed method will provide the latest and most advanced medical technology in the field of combined treatment and diagnosis (Theranostics) for patients in need in this field," Assadi added.

Theranostics is a two-pronged approach to diagnosing and treating cancers through the use of radiotracers. Radiotracers are compounds made of radiation and chemicals that selectively bind to a specific target in the body.

"By implementing this new method, our country joined the group of few countries that have been able to open a new chapter in cancer treatment methods by using new technologies in medicine and in the field of radiopharmaceuticals," the researcher added.

"To date, 6 patients with advanced cancer and resistant to usual treatments were treated with this method," he added.

"So far, the treatment of cancer in the country has been with beta-emitting elements, which started today with alpha-emitting elements, and to start the work, it was done on prostate cancer patients,"
