No-fly zone over Syria violates international law: Iran MP

An Iranian lawmaker says the possible imposition of a no-fly zone over Syria by the United States is a flagrant violation of international laws.
Hojjatollah Souri, a member of Iran's Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Wednesday that the establishment of a no-fly zone over the Syrian territory would not only inflict heavy expenses on American people but would also amount to a flagrant violation of the international law.

The no-fly zone is one of the five options proposed to US Congress by Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey to help extremist groups topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Iranian legislator noted that the White House and the US congressmen are well aware that any military intervention in Syria would be to their detriment.

Despite sporadic conflicts in Syria over the past two years, the Syrian army has shown that it is capable of confronting any military scenario plotted by Western states, Souri added.

He acknowledged that a possible military intervention in Syria by the US would further fuel the deadly crisis in the Arab country, but maintained that such a move was doomed to fail.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The UN says more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the violence.

Western powers and their regional allies, including the Israeli regime, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, continue to support militant groups, including al-Qaeda-linked terrorists, in Syria.
