According to The Iran Project, “I believed that it would be better to engage in dialogue, but the Leader of the Revolution stated that we will not negotiate with the United States, and I also declared that we will not negotiate with the United States,” Pezeshkian said while attending an open session of Parliament on Sunday.

“However, we must find appropriate ways to resolve problems,” he said.

He reiterated that while he remains an advocate of dialogue, he will firmly adhere to the position set by the Leader.

“I may hold a belief, but when the Leader of the Revolution determines a direction, we must adjust ourselves accordingly and find the right path within that framework,” he added.

During a speech on February 7, Ayatollah Khamenei said that Iran was open to negotiations with all countries, adding, “The only exception here is America. Of course, we don’t count the Israeli regime as an exception — because that regime is not a government to begin with and is rather a criminal and land-usurping gang.”

“Some pretend that if we sit at the negotiating table, it would solve certain problems, but the reality that we must correctly understand is that negotiations with the U.S. do not have any effect on solving the country’s problems,” he said.

Echoing the Leader’s remarks, President Pezeshkian said days later that the United States didn’t intend to engage in negotiations with Iran and rather wanted Iran to submit to its will.

“They are not after negotiations,” he said. “They want us to be submissive to them. But we won’t be made submissive.”
