Iran's interim Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani (R) meets with Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Elio Rodríguez Perdomo in Tehran on July 29, 2024.
According to The Iran Project, he made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Elio Rodríguez Perdomo, who is in Tehran to attend Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swearing-in ceremony.

Bagheri Kani said that "the most important human issue in the world now" is the crimes that the Israeli regime is committing against the Palestinian people in the besieged Gaza.

The issue of “the continuation, escalation and spread of these crimes is a threat to peace and security in the region and the world, and a clear example of war crimes and crimes against humanity,” he added.

“We are required to make more serious efforts to prevent these crimes.”

The top Iranian diplomat also hailed Cuba's position on Palestine’s developments and underlined the need for further consultations to stop Israel’s genocidal aggression against Gaza.

He emphasized the capacities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Tehran and Havana, calling for the development of economic relations on par with the political ones.

Iran and Cuba have independent policies, Bagheri Kani said, noting that the two countries should cooperate with each other in countering international threats and unilateralism, and seek new mechanisms and procedures to strengthen their ties.

The Cuban official, for his part, said Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz will take part in Pezeshkian’s inauguration ceremony to show Havana’s keenness to boost relations with Tehran.

He also expressed Cuba’s full readiness to cooperate with the new Iranian government and officials.

Cuba supports the upholding of the Palestinians’ rights, Rodriguez Perdomo asserted, adding that his country’s foreign policy priority is countering Israel's crimes in Gaza.

Cuba joined South Africa's case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip, he said.
