Brazil to host BRICS summit in July amid trade tensions with US
BRICS, initially formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded in 2010 with the inclusion of South Africa. The bloc grew further last year, adding Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, while Saudi Arabia has been invited to join. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied for membership, and other countries have expressed interest.
Recently, the group welcomed Indonesia as its 11th member and designated Nigeria as a “partner country,” a status introduced at the 2024 summit in Kazan. Brazil stated that partner countries are also invited to participate in the upcoming summit and may attend other meetings if all members agree.
“We will make crucial decisions for development, cooperation, and improving the lives of all the inhabitants of these countries,” said Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
Meanwhile, trade tensions between Brazil and the United States have escalated following new tariffs imposed by Washington. US President Donald Trump has threatened 100% tariffs on BRICS nations if they act to undermine the US dollar.
BRICS leaders, however, have reaffirmed their commitment to developing an independent payment system.
In response to new US tariffs on Brazilian steel and aluminum, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva vowed on Friday to impose reciprocal measures.
