Russia’s Lavrov in Tehran for talks with Iranian officials
According to The Iran Project, Lavrov landed in the Iranian capital on Tuesday, a day after holding talks with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara. Russian media reported that the Russian foreign minister will discuss regional and bilateral issues with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Tehran.
“A special focus will be on further efforts to boost mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation with regard to the implementation of key joint projects in the fields of energy and transport,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In addition, the parties will discuss a number of pressing international issues, including the situation in Syria, the South Caucasus, Afghanistan, Yemen, and the Persian Gulf region.
They will also exchange views on diplomatic efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The agreement, to which Russia is a signatory, has been close to collapse since it was unilaterally abandoned by the U.S. in 2018, during Trump’s first term in office.
The two diplomats held discussions and are expected to brief reporters at a joint press conference.
The visit follows a trip by Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian to Moscow on January 17, where he met with President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders signed a comprehensive strategic agreement to further expand cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
