Foreign mediation efforts fail in Egypt: Presidency

The Egyptian presidency says over 10 days of diplomatic efforts by envoys of foreign countries, including the United States, to resolve the crisis in the North African country have failed.
The phase of diplomatic efforts has ended today. These efforts have not achieved the hoped for results, the presidency said in a Wednesday statement.
The statement added that the Muslim Brotherhood is completely responsible for the failure of these efforts, and for consequent events and developments relating to violations of the law and endangering public safety.
The statement followed mediations by the European Union and the US to resolve the crisis sparked by the July 3 ouster of former president, Mohamed Morsi.

US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, senior US senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, as well as EU envoy Bernardino Leon traveled to Cairo where they were joined by delegates from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar.

Meanwhile, an EU spokesman says the bloc will keep encouraging all sides, including the Muslim Brotherhood and the army, to hold inclusive talks.

We will continue to do all we can to try and encourage people to get this inclusive dialogue going that is so important to see a return to the democratic transition in Egypt. We will continue our efforts, Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said.

Egypt has been the scene of increasing deadly violence since the overthrow of Morsi by the army in early June.

Scores of Egyptians, most of them supporters of Morsi, have been killed or injured in the violence ever since his ouster.
