TEHRAN (FNA)- Iraqi security force on Sunday launched a major offensive against insurgent groups in the Western and Northwestern parts of the country after a wave of bombings killed and wounded hundreds of people.
Commander in Chief of Iraqi Armed Forces and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki signed commands of a major security strike in Iraq's Western al-Jazira area (vast desert) to hunt down the terrorists, state-run Iraqia channel quoted a statement issued by the Iraqi General Command of the Armed Forces as saying.
Al-Jazira operations command is responsible for the security of the Western desert and the border areas with Syria, while the two operations commands of Anbar and Nineveh are respectively responsible for the security in cities of the two provinces.
The Iraqi channel did not give further details about the offensive, a day after a wave of bomb attacks across the country killed more than 60 people and wounded over 200.
The major crackdowns on terrorists also cover areas around the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, which are among the biggest security operations since the pullout of US troops in December 2011.
