‘Aggressors will pay heavy price for any attack on Syria’

As the war rhetoric against Syria intensifies, the Syrian ambassador to Tehran says aggressors will pay a heavy price if they attack the Arab country.
“In defense of its nation, Syria will decisively respond to any [act of] aggression by the US and aggressors will pay a heavy price for their assault [on the country],” Adnan Hassan Mahmoud said Sunday.

The call for military action against the Arab state intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

Following the claims, the United States and a number of its allies were quick to engage in a major propaganda campaign to promote war against Syria despite the fact that Damascus has categorically rejected being behind the attack.

Mahmoud once again dismissed the accusations of chemical weapons use, saying such groundless claims are a pretext to justify military action against Syria following the strategic success gained by the Syrian army over extremist groups.

He also described a strike against Syria as a war on the entire anti-Israeli resistance front in the Middle East, stressing that the Syrian nation has a strong will and morale to resist against aggression.

Anti-war demonstrations were held in several countries across the world over the past few days, suggesting that Syria will not stand alone in dealing with a Western assault, said the Syrian envoy.

On Saturday, US President Barack Obama said he has decided that Washington should launch military strikes against Syria. Obama, however, said he will seek authorization for an attack from Congress when lawmakers return from recess on September 9.
