US-led air attack kills one in central Afghanistan

A US-led air raid has killed at least one person in Afghanistan, with an Afghan official saying a Taliban militant was targeted in the attack.
This comes after US-led forces conducted an airstrike in central Wardak Province on Wednesday.

There are conflicting reports about the identity of the victim.

Afghan security sources say the dead Afghan was a high-ranking Taliban militant, but locals insist that the deceased was a civilian.

Taliban militant group has yet to confirm the incident.

UN observers have reported in the past that Afghan civilians, including women and children, are the main victims of US-led attacks in the war-torn country.

A recent similar US-led airstrike in the eastern Paktia province killed 16 people whom Afghans said were civilians.

Washington claims that its airstrikes target militants, but local sources say civilians have been the main victims of the attacks.

The Afghan government has on numerous occasions warned Washington to stop attacks on innocent civilians.

Civilian casualties caused by foreign forces have been a major source of tension between Kabul and Washington.

The casualties inflicted by US-led troops have sparked massive anti-US protests in the past.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of Washingtons so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country, despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.
