The current president of the UN Security Council (UNSC) has described a recent visit by UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman to Iran as significant.The main objective of Feltmans trip to Iran last week was to discuss the situation in Syria as well as the Geneva-2 conference, and prompted positive reaction by all UNSC members, said Gary Quinlan, the Australian ambassador to the UN, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the UNSC.
Feltman held several meetings with different Iranian officials, Quinlan further added on Wednesday.
During the visit, which was the first by a UN official following the inauguration of the new Iranian administration, Feltman tried to obtain a glimpse of the new administrations policies, Quinlan said.
While in Iran, he added, Feltman detected Tehrans interest in dialog and even engaged in debates about the trend of nuclear talks.
The visit was a significant one, and all UNSC members are pleased about the talks between Feltman and the Iranian authorities, the UNSC president added.
Following Feltmans visit last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif noted that although Feltman is American, he met Iranian officials wearing a UN envoys hat and that Iran has no direct talks with US officials.
The remarks by Quinlan come as tensions continue to run high in the region as Washington is pushing for military action against Syria over the accusation that the Syrian government used chemical weapons in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.
Damascus, however, has vehemently denied the accusation, saying the gas attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false flag operation.
The UN, Iran, Russia, and China have warned against any military action on Syria.
