An Iranian lawmaker has condemned US threats of a military strike against Syria, stating that such an action will further tarnish Washingtons image.Member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Mohammad Reza Mohseni Sani said on Thursday that the United States and the West seek new breathing space in the wake of their international isolation.
The US has neither the UN approval, nor the global consensus for an attack on Syria, and merely intends to restore the reputation it has lost over the past years. It should know, however, that an onslaught on Syria will not help to restore its reputation and will further mar its image, he pointed out.
The Iranian legislator further noted that Washington will suffer a much graver defeat than those in Afghanistan and Iraq should it launch a strike on Syria.
He added that the US is apparently seeking to lure other countries into war through propaganda and warmongering and then withdraw, but Syria is ready to defend itself.
The Iranian MP stated that a US military action on Syria will put all its interests as well as Israel in danger.
The call for military action against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.
Damascus has vehemently denied the accusations, saying the chemical attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false-flag operation.
On August 31, US President Barack Obama said he had decided that Washington must take military action against the Syrian government, which would mean a unilateral military strike without a UN mandate.
Obama said despite having made up his mind, he will take the case to US Congress. But he added that he is prepared to order military action against the Syrian government at any time.
