Iran President Rouhani skips UN lunch over alcohol

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has skipped a lunch banquet hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon because alcohol was served at the tables.
The announcement has been made on Tuesday by Iranian officials who are accompanying the Iranian president during his visit to New York to attend the 68the session of the UN General Assembly.

There have already been speculations about the possibility of a meeting between the Iranian president and his US counterpart Barack Obama over lunch.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Tuesday that Iran is not after a meeting per se, but has frameworks for the pursuit of its interest.

This meeting should take place on an appropriate occasion, she stated, adding, however, that in Iran's view, no such occasion has arisen yet.

The White House has not ruled out that the two leaders would catch up somewhere on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

On September 19, White House spokesman Jay Carney talked about the possibility of a meeting between Obama and Rouhani in New York.
