Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta announces the end of the Nairobi mall standoff after six attackers were killed and 11 others arrested by Kenyan security forces.Kenyatta said a deadly siege on a shopping center in the capital Nairobi is over, adding security forces have defeated and ashamed the attackers.
Our losses are immense, Kenyatta said in a nationally televised address, adding, We have ashamed and defeated our attackers. These cowards will meet justice.
"I promise that we shall have a full accountability for the mindless destruction, deaths, pain, loss and suffering we have all undergone as a national family," the president noted.
Kenyatta said 61 civilians as well as six security forces have been killed in the tragic hostage-taking drama.
The president announced three days of national mourning effective on Wednesday.
Somalias al-Shabab fighters have claimed responsibility for the attack on the Westgate shopping center. They stressed the attack was in retaliation against the presence of Kenyan forces in Somalia.
The militant group has also warned of more attacks if Kenyan forces dont leave the Horn of Africa country.
The UN Special Envoy for Somalia Nicholas Kay has called for stepping up fight against the al-Shabab fighters.
The UN approach and my approach to al-Shabab in Somalia is [that] we need to intensify our campaigns, Kay said in Geneva, adding, It must be military, but also political and practical.... On all three, we need to redouble our efforts."
