Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says it is the Iranian people that bear the brunt of US-led sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The sanctions will eventually hurt the people and they are the ones who will have to pay the price for the US-engineered bans, said Rajoy in a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday on the sidelines of the 68th UN General Assembly Session in New York.

Therefore, he added, the European Union (EU) countries would like the current situation to change and the sanctions reviewed.

Rajoy expressed hope that Iran and the EU would immediately resolve any differences between them. He also discussed the Syria crisis as well as the Palestinian issue with the Iranian president.

The Spanish premier also congratulated Rouhani on his election as the Iranian president and described Iran as a great country with a glorious history.

Rouhani, for his part, called for the further expansion of Tehran-Madrid ties on all fronts.

He said that Iran has always acted in line with international regulations over its nuclear energy program and is ready to dispel fears in that regard based on mutual respect.
�Those who have slapped sanctions [against Iran] have come to the conclusion that the sanctions are counterproductive,� said the president.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and European Union using the claim as an excuse to impose illegal sanctions against Tehran. The bans come on top of four rounds of US-instigated UN Security Council sanctions against Iran under the same pretext.

Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, stressing that as a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
