Shooting kills woman, injures policeman near US Capitol

A woman who was with her child has been shot dead in her car after she was trying to ram barricades outside of the White House near the US Capitol.
A traffic accident related to the shooting also led a policeman to be injured in Washington, DC, ABC News reported on Thursday.

The incident also put government buildings on Capitol Hill on lockdown and members of Congress were sheltered in their offices.

Law-enforcement officials said the incident occurred when a car slammed into posts that prevent vehicles from getting close to the White House. The car drove away quickly, and police officers chased after her.

The child who was found in the woman's car is said to be unhurt.

US President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation that happened on the third day of a government shutdown in the country.

A witness said several police cars chased a black sedan at high speed toward the Capitol.

"They ran all the red lights. It was a very dangerous situation," Travis Gilbert said.

He added that the car stopped outside the Capitol and he heard gunshots. One police car hit a bollard and was damaged.

The injured policeman was transferred to a nearby hospital.

"He appears to be conscious and breathing but we're following up," Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine said. "As far as we know, no officer has been shot."

The shooting was an isolated incident and officials have no information that this is related to terrorism, Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine said.
