TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Secretary General of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Mohammad Farhadisaid he has conferred with high-ranking officials of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on expansion of cooperation with the humanitarian organization.
In his first official visit to the IFRC headquarters in Geneva, the newly-appointed Iranian official had a number of meetings with senior officials of the international organization, including IFRC Secretary General Bekele Geleta.
Farhadi said he has discussed the procedures on implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between Irans Red Crescent Society and the international federation, as well as the ways to bolster cooperation on relief and rescue assistance with the International Red Cross.
In recent remarks on October 2, Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Lebanon, Fabrizio Carbone, had also praised Iran for the humanitarian aid it has delivered to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon so far.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world's largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.
Founded in 1919, the IFRC comprises 187 member Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, a secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. There are more societies in formation. The Red Crescent is used in place of the Red Cross in many Islamic countries.
