Iran gas pipeline discussed during PM’s US visit

Islamabad, Oct 26, IRNA – Iran gas pipeline project was discussed during Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to the United States.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said at his weekly press briefing, adding the stand of the government of Pakistan was made known during the talks.

“It (IP) should be seen in the context of acute energy crisis that we have in our country,” the spokesman said.

He said all options are on the table and the government is pursuing the project.

He added that the situation in Afghanistan was also discussed with particular focus on post 2014 scenario.

“The US did appreciate the positive role that Pakistan is playing, particularly with regards to the reconciliation process.”

He said Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States are working together to carry forward the process of reconciliation in order to have a lasting peace in Afghanistan, which is so essential for peace and security in our region.

Asked about the US approach towards Pakistan’s quest for talks with the Taliban, he said the US side has no problem with the talks.

“As it is, the talks with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, is an internal matter for Pakistan. And this is part of the efforts to secure peace,” the spokesman said.
