TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian underlined the necessity for the Syrian people to decide their own fate through electing their favorite leaders, and said the western countries are opposed to holding free elections in Syria.Certain western sides dont want free elections in Syria, Amir Abdollahian said in a televised interview with Irans state-run TV on Sunday night.
We believe that Syria needs political reforms like many other political systems and the westerners didnt even allow Bashar al-Assad to pursue his political reforms, he added.
Meantime, Amir Abdollahian expressed pleasure that most sides involved in the Syrian crisis are giving up their military approaches for political solutions by decreasing their support for the terrorist groups and sending less weapons to them, but stressed that the situation in Syria is not acceptable yet and weapons and terrorists are still being dispatched to the country.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.
Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.
The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
In October 2011, calm was almost restored in the Arab state after President Bashar al-Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies sought hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots to topple President al-Assad, who is well known in the world for his anti-Israeli stances.
