NAM calls on US to abide by UN Cuba resolution

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has called on the United States to abide by a UN resolution on the lifting of the economic sanctions Washington has imposed against Cuba.
Speaking on behalf of the NAM in a Tuesday meeting of the UN General Assembly, Irans Deputy Ambassador to the UN Gholam-Hossein Dehqani called for an end to the US embargo against the Caribbean island.

The Iranian envoy described the 5-decade-old commercial and trade bans against Havana as a violation of Cubas sovereignty and the Cuban nations rights.

On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly for the resolution called Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.

A record 188 countries voted to condemn the US commercial and financial embargo against Cuba for the 22nd year in a row.

Dehqani underlined that the overwhelming support of the UN member countries for the resolution showed that the international community opposes the continuation of the bans against Cuba.

He stressed the NAMs strong opposition to such sanctions, saying that earlier, in August 2012, the heads of state of the 120-member body in a summit in Tehran had urged the removal of unilateral sanctions, which flout international laws and the UN Charter.

Speaking before the General Assembly, Cubas Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said The US policy against Cuba is suffering from an absolute international isolation and discredit and lacks every ethical or legal ground.

Havana and Washington have been at odds since the Cuban revolution, led by Fidel Castro, toppled Fulgencio Batistas regime in 1959. The embargo was enforced in 1960 and became a near total embargo in 1962.
