Tehran, Nov 4, IRNA -- Deputy Chief of the South & West Asia & Program Advisor at United Nations Development Program and Program Specialist at UNDP, Balasubramaniam Murali, said on Monday that protection of the Caspian Sea and conservation of its bio-diversity and resources require environment diplomacy.
Addressing ceremonies marking the 10th anniversary of conclusion of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the Tehran Convention, Murali said protection and management of Caspian Sea resources and environment is a permanent issue taken into consideration by Caspian Sea littoral states.
To this effect, he said, the Caspian Sea littoral states should define a comprehensive program.
He went on to say that the Caspian Convention faces many challenges which should be removed through compilation of a national program for the member countries.
Biodiversity of the Caspian Sea is very fragile, said the UN official, adding that therefore, attention should be paid to the provisions of the Caspian Sea Convention, while taking special and coordinated measures in that connection.
Murali warned that the Caspian Sea ecosystem which has reached an alarming stage would leave irreparable damage on it reaches the alarming level.
