Iran resolved to continue cooperation with UN on anti-drug campaign

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif appreciated Iran's anti-narcotics police force for their dedicated efforts in the combat against drugs, and stressed that Tehran is resolute to expand cooperation with the UN in this regard.


Speaking at a meeting with the new representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Leik Boonwaat in Tehran on Wednesday, the top Iranian diplomat pointed to the long record of good cooperation between Iran and the UN agency, and voiced Tehrans all-out readiness to continue collaboration between the two sides in campaign against drug trafficking.

He opined that fighting and uprooting the evil phenomenon which is threatening security of the whole globe needs close cooperation among all world countries.

Pointing out that the Iranian people and government are spearheading anti-drugs campaign in the world, he said the efforts are aimed at promoting global peace and security.

The UN official, for his part, appreciated Irans efforts and measures in fighting drugs and thanked Tehran for its close cooperation with the UN body.

Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as, the Persian Gulf states.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost nearly 4,000 of their personnel in the countrys combat against narcotics.

Iran spends billions of dollars and has lost thousands of its police troops in the war against traffickers.

Every year, Iran burns more than 60 tons of seized narcotics as a symbol of its determination to fight drugs.

Iran has recently established a central database and strengthened police-judiciary cooperation in a new effort to combat organized crime.
