Iran invites Lebanon parliament speaker to OIC event
Iran has invited Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to attend the 9th meeting of the parliament speakers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi met with the top Lebanese parliamentarian and extended to Berri an invitation from Irans Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani to take part in the event, which is slated to be held in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on February 18-19, 2014.

The OIC is an international organization consisting of 57 member states. It has a permanent delegation to the UN.

The OIC works to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.

During the meeting, the Iranian envoy and the Lebanese parliament speaker also discussed the latest regional and international developments.

Pointing to Irans active foreign policy, Berri said regional nations have realized that the Islamic Republic seeks positive interaction with countries in the Middle East and across the world, and that Tehran has always worked toward safeguarding the interests of regional nations.

He urged regional countries to remain vigilant against Israeli plots aimed at creating divisions among them.

The Zionist regime has exhausted all means and pooled its resources to reach its objectives and to sow the seeds of discord among regional nations, Berri stressed.

Roknabadi, for his part, pointed to the recent nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers and said Tehrans success in sealing a deal without compromising its inalienable rights has infuriated Israel, which is doing its utmost to avert a final agreement.

On November 24, Iran and the five permanent member of the UN Security Council - the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain - plus Germany sealed an interim agreement in the Swiss city of Geneva to pave the way for the full resolution of the decade-old dispute between Iran and the West over the Islamic Republics nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the United States and its allies agreed to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
