Iran hails Russia’s diplomatic efforts in nuclear talks

Iran’s new Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei has hailed diplomatic efforts by Moscow in the nuclear talks held between Iran and the Sextet over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
In a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Monday, Sanaei welcomed Moscow’s support in the talks and urged Russia to play a more active role in future negotiations until a final agreement is reached.

The Iranian ambassador also expressed Tehran’s readiness for the expansion of relations with Moscow on bilateral, regional and international levels.

On November 24, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US - plus Germany sealed an interim deal in the Swiss city of Geneva to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the dispute between the West and Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the six countries undertook to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Ryabkov, for his part, praised the progress of nuclear talks, saying the negotiations have reached a good level thanks to the efforts of the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his nuclear negotiating team.

He also slammed new US sanctions against Iran and called on Washington to live up to their commitments stipulated in the deal reached with Iran in Geneva.
