A senior Iranian diplomat has urged all countries and international organizations to firmly support the implementation of a UN resolution that is based on the Iranian presidents World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal.Iranian President Hassan Rouhanis proposal is a turning point that can bring about great global developments to achieve lasting peace and a world free of violence and extremism, said Irans Ambassador to SerbiaMajid Fahimpour in an interview with IRNA in the Serbian capital of Belgrade on Wednesday.
Ever since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, he said, Iran has made great strides to prevent violence and extremism and to promote peace and friendship among nations and remove divisions through dialog.
The adoption of the proposal by the UN bears testimony to Irans peace-promoting policies, the envoy added.
Fahimpour also expressed hope that all countries and international organizations would seriously contribute to the eradication of violence and extremism across the world.
Violence and extremism stem from poverty, ignorance, discrimination, double standards and unilateralism, he said, urging all organizations and countries to work together closely to eliminate the scourges.
On December 18, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve Rouhanis WAVE proposal, which calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism. The Iranian president had made the proposal in his address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25.
Under the UN resolution adopted in accordance with the WAVE proposal, the General Assembly would urge member states to take appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.
The resolution also encourages respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction of any kind such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
