Tehran and London are mending ties after provocative and insulting remarks of a former British ambassador to Iran ignited sentiments here and ended in the closure of the embassy in Tehran.
The insulting remarks of the former envoy, Simon Gass, about the human rights conditions in Iran coupled with Britain's decision to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran over its nuclear program pushed the Iranian lawmakers on November 27, 2011 to vote by a large majority to downgrade diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom.
Two days after the decision by the Iranian parliament, hundreds of Iranian students staged a protest outside the British Embassy in Tehran and pulled down the UK flag.
On November 30, 2011, London cut off its ties with Tehran, withdrew its diplomatic staff from Iran and the Iranian Embassy in London was closed.
In September, Iran and Britain agreed to announce the names of their non-resident charges daffaires.
In a meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York City on September 23, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his British counterpart William Hague discussed improvement of Tehran-London relations, Irans nuclear energy program as well as regional developments.
Later the two states named non-resident charge d'affairs to start mending their relations. In mid November, Iranian non-resident Charge d'affairs in the UK Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh and his British counterpart Sharma held phone talks.
During their phone conversation, the Iranian and British officials agreed that the countries should exchange delegations in a bid to continue their cooperation.
