Irans Zarif in Moscow to discuss Geneva deal, Syria

Irans foreign minister has arrived in Moscow to hold talks with Russian officials about the nuclear deal between Iran and the six powers as well as the conflict in Syria.
Upon arriving at Moscows Vnukovo International Airport on Wednesday night, Mohammad Javad Zarif said he will pursue earlier talks between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on bilateral and international issues.
In meeting with our Russian allies, we will continue discussions over the nuclear issue and the last round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 that will commence in the near future, Zarif said, stressing Moscows role in the upcoming nuclear talks.
On January 11, representatives from Iran and five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- plus Germany wrapped up two days of discussions about how to execute the nuclear accord they sealed in Geneva on November 24, 2013. They two sides agreed to begin implementing the historic nuclear deal on January 20.

Under the Geneva agreement, the Sextet undertook to lift some of the existing sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehrans confidence-building measure to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities for a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.

During his one-day visit to Moscow, the Iranian foreign minister will meet with Putin and hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Zarif, who flew to Moscow together with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, is also scheduled to join trilateral talks with the Syrian and the Russian side on Thursday.

The talks come ahead of the long-awaited Geneva II international talks on Syria.

The conference is scheduled to be held in Switzerland in two parts. On January 22, the opening session of the event will be in the Swiss city of Montreux and then it will be moved to the UN office in Geneva on January 24.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the foreign-backed militancy that has been plaguing Syria over the past three years.
