FM calls for enhancement of Iran-Turkmenistan economic cooperation

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for the further expansion of mutual cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan in economic fields.


Upon his arrival at Ashgabat International Airport on Monday morning, the Iranian foreign minister told reporters that he is in Turkmenistan to take part in the two countries' Joint Economic Cooperation Commission meeting.

Zarif underlined that the Joint Economic Cooperation Commission meeting provides a good opportunity for broadening the bilateral relations, and said, The type of our relations with Turkmenistan necessitates extensive cooperation in different economic fields.

The Iranian foreign minister said President Hassan Rouhani will soon visit Ashgabat at the invitation of his Turkmen counterpart.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Tehran for Ashgabat Monday morning to attend the 13th Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission meeting on January 20-21 in the Turkmen capital.

A joint trade conference to be attended by around 80 businessmen and officials from the state and private sectors of Iran and Turkmenistan will also be held on the sidelines of the joint commission meeting.

The 12th Joint Iran-Turkmenistan Economic Commission meeting was held in Tehran in July 2012. Iran and Turkmenistan signed a cooperation pact in 30 paragraphs on energy and fuel, economy and commerce, transportation and communication, agriculture and water management and cultural fields.
