Zarif calls for more ties with Turkmenistan

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called for the expansion of bilateral relations between the Islamic Republic and Turkmenistan.
In a meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov in Ashgabat on Tuesday, Zarif praised the high level of cooperation between the two countries and said the development of ties with neighboring countries, including Turkmenistan, was a foreign policy of the administration of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

He said that there were suitable grounds for further development of the bilateral ties between the two neighbors in energy and electricity sectors as well as in the field of the transit of goods.

Pointing to the developments in the Islamic world, Middle East, Caucasus, and Eurasia, the top Iranian diplomat also called for collective cooperation among countries to help establish peace and stability in the noted regions.

The Turkmen president, for his part urged an active role by private sectors and businessmen in developing the trade ties between Iran and Turkmenistan.

Zarif visited Ashgabat to attend the 13th session of the Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission. On Monday he signed a memorandum of understanding with his Turkmen counterpart Rashid Meredov on the development of ties in different fields, including the transfer of electricity, the exploration of oil and gas resources and agriculture.
