IAEA Board of Governors welcomes Geneva deal: Iran official

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors welcomes the Geneva deal as an important step in the peaceful resolution of Irans nuclear issue, says Irans ambassador to the IAEA.
Reza Najafi made the remarks after an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Governors in Vienna on Friday.

The meeting was held to discuss the IAEA supervision of implementation of the Geneva agreement between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Britain, Russia, China and France - plus Germany.

At the beginning of this meeting, the head of the agency released his report and then the representatives of the Non-Aligned Movement countries (Iran), the European Union (Greece) and Latin America (Nicaragua) presented their statements on the subject of the meeting Other members of the Board of Governors also separately issued statements and opinions, Najafi said.

The Iranian envoy to the IAEA also commented on calls by IAEA chief, Yukiya Amano, on the agencys member states to raise funds for the inspection of Irans nuclear activities.

Najafi said that several countries including the United States, the UK, Japan and Denmark have announced their readiness to cover the expenses.

We will need to nearly double the staff resources devoted to verification in Iran. We will need to significantly increase the frequency of the verification activities which we are currently conducting. Our inspectors will need access to additional locations, Amano told the extraordinary meeting on Friday.

He also called the historic deal of November 24, 2013 between Tehran and the six major powers as an important step forward towards achieving a comprehensive solution to Irans nuclear issue.

Iran and the six powers started the implementation of the nuclear agreement on January 20.
