OPEC, GECF chiefs to attend Iran energy conference

The heads of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) will visit Tehran in the near future, says and Iranian energy official.

OPEC Secretary-General Abdullah al-Badri and GECF Chief Mohammad Hussein Adeli will be joined by American and European experts at an international conference in Tehran on March 7-8 to look into the prospects of the Iranian oil industry after all sanctions on the country are lifted, said Chairman of the Iranian Association for Energy Economics Mohammad Mazraati on Wednesday.

Mazraati further stated that the conference, which also aims to examine technologies available to produce renewable energies, will provide the chance to better introduce to foreigners the oil investment opportunities in Iran.

Irans oil, gas and petrochemical industries have the potential to absorb nearly USD 200 billion in investment, he said.

The official also asserted that the two-day conference will further look into Irans energy security policies, challenges and opportunities facing the country for its return to the oil market and its investment potential.

Asked whether the sanctions on Iran prompted the country to organize the conference, he said the attitude of foreign ambassadors towards Iran has changed and they are currently encouraging investors and commercial delegations from their own countries forge partnerships with Iran.
