Russian, Iranian foreign chiefs hold nuclear phone call

Russian foreign affairs chief Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, have held phone talks on the first results of Tehrans nuclear deal with a group of six international mediators. This is according to the Russian foreign office.

The source said the ministers discussed ways to promote bilateral cooperation in a wide range of spheres, including trade and economic partnership.

They also exchanged opinions on the Iranian nuclear issue. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Mr. Lavrov and Mr. Zarif said that Geneva agreements took off to a good start since the deal was reached on January 20.

The ministers underscored that the Joint Plan of Action, adopted by Tehran and P5+1 member states on November 24, would help to allay concerns about Irans nuclear program, while also giving the country a leeway within the Non-proliferation Treaty.

Up for discussion was also the ongoing Syrian conflict, as well as other international and regional issues, the Russian source said.
