Senior Iran MP raps US support for Syria terrorists

A senior Iranian lawmaker has blamed the United States for supporting terrorist groups fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Speaking in Damascus on Wednesday, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of Iran's Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, warned that terrorism could backfire against Washington itself.

Boroujerdi also warned against terrorism as a serious threat to the entire Middle East.

The Iranian legislator stressed that the crisis in Syria has no military solution, and that no power is able to defeat Syria as long as the Syrian people stand with their army.

He also reiterated Tehran's support for the Syrian government and people in the face of terrorism.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. Some sources say around 130,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by Western-backed militants.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- namely Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

On January 31, the last round of peace talks between Damascus and the foreign-backed opposition ended in the Swiss city of Geneva with no concrete results.

The deadlock was due to sharp differences between the two sides, namely the opposition's insistence on the formation of a transitional government and Assad's resignation before the deadly militancy in the country is addressed.

Syrian officials, however, stressed that fighting terrorism should be the first priority in any talks about the current situation.
