US not in position to preach on human rights: Iran

Iran has reacted to a report by the United States about human rights, saying Washington is in no position to preach to others about human rights.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the US itself is known for numerous cases of human rights violations.
The statement denounced the "the extensive and systematic human rights violations" in the notorious Guantanamo prison in Cuba and the US-built Bagram prison in Afghanistan, blaming the US for allowing the perpetrators to walk free with impunity.
The Foreign Ministry also slammed the "arbitrary detention and torture of people in the network of US secret prisons, including in Europe."

Washington is also responsible for "murdering hundreds of innocent women and children" in assassination drone strikes while it backs the "inhumane measures by the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people," the statement said.

"Under these circumstances, the US is not in a position to preach to others about human rights," the statement read.

The US State Department's report, published on Thursday, was based on groundless information provided by groups opposing Iran's government, the Foreign Ministry added.

The US report claimed there had been little progress on human rights in Iran since President Hassan Rouhani assumed office in August 2013.
