TEHRAN, Iran A senior Iranian lawmaker says a group of European Parliament members has called off a planned trip to Iran.
The semiofficial Mehr news agency quotes Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi as saying that the visit scheduled to begin Sunday was cancelled after Iran rejected preconditions by the team to meet with jailed Iranian dissidents Nasrin Sotoudeh and Jafar Panahi.
Boroujerdi heads the parliaments Committee on National Security.
The European Parliament awarded the 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Soutedeh, a human rights lawyer, and Panahi, a filmmaker. Both were charged with roles in supporting the opposition in post-election unrest in 2009.
