Artificial tactile sense enables measuring fabric quality

Artificial tactile sense enables measuring fabric quality
TEHRAN, April 14 (MNA) Researchers in the Amir Kabir University of Technology have developed an artificial sensor which measures fabric quality through tactile sense.
Saeed Fathi, the major researcher told Mehr News that the research project conducted to evaluate the hand-enhanced measurement of fabric quality. Measuring fabric quality is usually done by experienced experts through sensing the fabric by hand; however, these experts could not determine how high-quality the fabric is, he added.

Since the beginning of the research in textile industry, the researchers have attempted to find a rule for evaluation of the fabric quality and quantity through tactile sensory power of hand, he said, we conducted a research to develop a system drawing upon artificial tactile sense to measure the fabric quality mechanically, and record the quality in digits.

Fathi also said that the project used the technology to develop special machinery and to measure fabrics three characteristics of Roughness, softness, and flexibility. A machine was also developed to measure the fabric curvature, which imitates the human fingers in evaluating the fabric flexibility, he said.

He added that the system consisted of three parts. An electronic sensor which discerns the changes in thickness, high, and the distance between warp and woof, and the resistance against curving forces to measure fabric quality through special equations and gives the result in digits, Fathi explained.

The system is also capable of measuring thread quality, he said, and that the system would find applications in research projects focused on textile industry.
