Iran, Syria stress enhancement of economic ties

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria have emphasized their determination to further strengthen bilateral economic relations, particularly in the energy sector.
On Monday, Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi met with Rostam Qasemi, the head of Iran-Syria Economic Relations Development Committee, in Damascus to discuss the expansion of bilateral ties in various economic, commercial and energy areas, SANA reported.

During the meeting, Qasemi and Halqi stressed the need for the implementation of the agreements previously reached between Tehran and Damascus and held talks on the inking of new accords in different areas, including commerce and energy.

Halqi underlined the importance of Tehran-Damascus economic ties, calling for the participation of Iranian companies in rebuilding the Arab state, which has been grappling with deadly violence since March 2011.

The Syrian premier further expressed gratitude for the Islamic Republic for standing by the Syrian nation all through the foreign-backed crisis plaguing the country.

Qasemi, for his part, reiterated the Islamic Republics support for Syria in the face of the bloody turmoil, hailing the countrys recent gains in the fight against Takfiri terrorism.

Following the meeting, Qasemi also said that his talks with Halqi would contribute to the further expansion of Tehran-Damascus cooperation in different domains, according to SANA.

On April 13, the Iranian official also met with Syrias Electricity Minister Imad Khamis to discuss ways to bolster Tehran-Damascus cooperation in the field of electricity.

During the meeting, Khamis called for strong economic ties between Iranian and Syrian companies, adding, Preparations are underway to sign a comprehensive, long-term treaty in electricity that guarantees [the] establishment of power generating stations in Syria.
